Its finally here! For all of you (66 of you :O) who wanted a tutorial on how I shade, here it is! If you have any specific questions that weren't answered here, I'd be happy to help and I will add them to a FAQ section at the bottom of the artist's comments to help others :D

Horse featured here is Isra' Mona, my little Arabian mare. Here is the finished pic of her: [link]

FAQ

Q. What colour are you using to highlight with? Is it solid white switched on some kind of screen/dodge layer mode, or did you just pick a lighter tone from your base colour?
A. For this I just used a lighter colour than the base shadow layer, and nothing else.

What settings do you use for the water color tool? Do you keep it on the original settings or make the opacity lighter or? :?

I tend to fiddle around depending on what style I'm using at the time, though I always keep it above 50% opacity, I'll have it at almost 100% if I'm doing something more painterly and want the texture, otherwise I keep it around 70%

Oh okay! I tried it earlier, but it didn't turn out all shiny like this or anywhere near how nice this looks. I did use SAI, like you, but I wonder if there's maybe something I'm doing "wrong" or different that changes the effect.

Doubt it, everything takes practice to get right, and there are so many tiny things that I probably do without realizing and can't communicate in a tutorial. Having a reference on where to place the shading really helps as a starter though ;)

Okay thanks! I will keep practicing. I really, extremely admire your shading style for horses and the like, and I want to be able to shade somewhat in your style. It's so clean and shiny and adds such great detail to a piece. Hopefully practice will get me there. :)
And do you apply the color with the pen tool and then go over it with the water color tool? Or do you go on straight with the water color tool? And do you use the blending tool at all?

Using this method I apply colour first and then blend with the water colour tool
