Its finally here! For all of you (66 of you :O) who wanted a tutorial on how I shade, here it is! If you have any specific questions that weren't answered here, I'd be happy to help and I will add them to a FAQ section at the bottom of the artist's comments to help others :D

Horse featured here is Isra' Mona, my little Arabian mare. Here is the finished pic of her: [link]

FAQ

Q. What colour are you using to highlight with? Is it solid white switched on some kind of screen/dodge layer mode, or did you just pick a lighter tone from your base colour?
A. For this I just used a lighter colour than the base shadow layer, and nothing else.

oh gosh. :la: i only discovered this minutes ago and already tried it out on a piece. it's so helpful! i always found it easier to put down the highlights, but i never came up with the idea to just start with a very dark base and put lighter colors on top of that. :dummy: life just got so much easier! thank you for sharing! i hope to finish my current piece this way. :huggle:

when you say water tool do you mean the blur tool or the water color tool?

Sorry I have another question, for the base shadow layer, does the color of the shadow layer change depending on the color of the horse?

Quick question, sorry its a tad bit off topic, first off do you use sai for your line arts? If so what tool do you use to make such straight lines, and how do you draw your manes and tail in the line art?

This tutorial is really old, but I've always done my linearts in SAI (I do pretty much everything in SAI, I feel the quality it produces is better than other drawing programs). I tend to use really large canvases for linearts which smooths out any bumps, but you can also use the curve tool on a vector layer.

What settings do you use for the water color tool? Do you keep it on the original settings or make the opacity lighter or? :?

I tend to fiddle around depending on what style I'm using at the time, though I always keep it above 50% opacity, I'll have it at almost 100% if I'm doing something more painterly and want the texture, otherwise I keep it around 70%

Oh okay! I tried it earlier, but it didn't turn out all shiny like this or anywhere near how nice this looks. I did use SAI, like you, but I wonder if there's maybe something I'm doing "wrong" or different that changes the effect.

Doubt it, everything takes practice to get right, and there are so many tiny things that I probably do without realizing and can't communicate in a tutorial. Having a reference on where to place the shading really helps as a starter though ;)

Okay thanks! I will keep practicing. I really, extremely admire your shading style for horses and the like, and I want to be able to shade somewhat in your style. It's so clean and shiny and adds such great detail to a piece. Hopefully practice will get me there. :)
And do you apply the color with the pen tool and then go over it with the water color tool? Or do you go on straight with the water color tool? And do you use the blending tool at all?

Using this method I apply colour first and then blend with the water colour tool

Thanks so much for this! I just got SAI, since I heard about how good it is for shading, and I can't wait to combine this with greyscale! Btw, do you know any tuts for beginners on SAI, so I can learn the tools? :3 I'm slowly leaving GIMP and moving towards SAI and PS, now that I have them. :)

Not currently, since I basically found out by experimenting myself :XD: From what I've seen, different people use different settings to produce a similar product, so its more what you're comfortable with technique wise :)

Well, I have all the basic settings on, with advanced as well and then I just... blur I guess. It takes a bit of practice to know how much to blur and where. Particuarly if you want to shade like I do, you have to know where the highlight lines are and smudge in such a way that you still get sharp edges... basically its practice makes perfect. Fiddle and experiment, since it is a little different from most other tools ;)

so, if I understand it right, you start from your shading, your darkerst colour, and you go lighter each time?
